firedamp

Gas that occurs in coal mines and is explosive when mixed with air in certain proportions. It consists chiefly of methane (CH4, natural gas or marsh gas) but always contains small quantities of other gases, such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen, and sometimes ethane and carbon monoxide.

23 Kyodo The death toll from a coal mine gas explosion in Heilongjiang Province in northeast China has risen to 104, making it the country's worst mining accident in two years, state media reported Monday.
TOKYO, Nov 21 (KUNA) -- The death toll from a coal mine gas explosion in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province on Saturday rose to 42 with 66 still trapped underground, official Xinhua News Agency reported.
It has now secured contracts for the London Underground and Coal Mine Gas Recovery worth pounds 1.
