Mineral Wells

City in Palo Pinto and Parker counties, north-central Texas, 69 km/43 mi west of Fort Worth; population (1990) 14,900. As its name suggests, the city is a spa town and health resort.

The economy of Mineral Wells is based on livestock, gas, and oil, but the city is most famous for its mineral waters, which have made it a prosperous resort and medical convention centre. The Crazy Well, discovered in 1885, was reputed to cure mental disorders. The town was founded in 1872, and in addition to its healthcare facilities now has various light manufacturing industries. Camp (later Fort) Wolters, a major World War II training facility, is situated just northeast
