minimum wage

Minimum level of pay for workers, usually set by government. In the UK, minimum pay for many groups of workers has been fixed by wages councils. Minimum wages are set to prevent low-paid workers from being exploited by employers who would otherwise pay them even lower wages. However, minimum wages are argued by some economists to cause unemployment because if wages were allowed to fall below the minimum wage level, some employers would be prepared to take on more workers.
