Minnelli, Vincente (1910–1986)

US film director. His colourfully stylish musicals include Meet Me in St Louis (1944), An American in Paris (1951), and Gigi (1958; Academy Award for best direction). He also directed a number of powerful dramas, including The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), The Cobweb (1955), and Two Weeks in Another Town (1962).

Among his many films are The Pirate (1948), Father of the Bride (1950), The Band Wagon (1953), Some Came Running (1958), and On A Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970).

Minnelli first gained experience as a set and costume designer for the stage, and screenwriter and choreographer for the cinema. He made his directorial debut with Cabin in the Sky (1943), initiating a 26-year association with the producer Arthur Freed (1894–1973) at MGM. He married Judy Garland, who starred in Meet Me in St Louis, and their daughter, Liza Minelli, also became a successful actor and singer. He also worked with the dancers Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire.
