City and seat of Ward County, in north-central North Dakota; population (2000) 36,600. Minot stands on the Souris (Mouse) River, 160 km/100 mi north of the state capital Bismarck.

Minot was founded in 1887 as a railway tent city. It is now a distribution, processing, and marketing centre for dairy and meat products, and also has railway workshops.
