Minto, Gilbert John Murray Kynynmond, 4th Earl of (1845–1914)

British colonial administrator who succeeded Curzon as viceroy of India from 1905 to 1910. With John Morley, secretary of state for India, he co-sponsored the Morley Minto reforms of 1909. The reforms increased Indian representation in government at provincial level, but also created separate Muslim and Hindu electorates which, it was believed, helped the British Raj in the policy of divide and rule. The was created earl in 1891.
