Minufiya

Governorate in northern Egypt, in the western part of the River Nile delta; area 1,612 sq km/622 sq mi; population (1995 est) 2,672,000. Minufiya contains some of the most productive land in the delta region; over one-third of it is used for the cultivation of maize.

Anwar Sadat, president of Egypt 1970–81, was born in Menufiyeh.
