Cycle of four one-act operas by Martinů: The Wise and Foolish Virgins (libretto by V Nezval after 12th-century French text); Little Mariken of Nijmegen (libretto by H Gheon after 15th-century Flemish legend); The Nativity (libretto by composer after Moravian folk texts); The Legend of Sister Pasqualina (libretto by composer after poem by J Zeyer and folk texts). Composed 1933–34, first performed in Brno, Czechoslovakia, on 23 February 1935.
