Miraculous Mandarin, The

Ballet in one act by Béla Bartók (scenario by M Lengyel); 1918–19, produced in Cologne on 27 November 1926. The Mandarin of the title is mugged by a prostitute and her gang, but he cannot die until he is sexually united with the woman who has attempted to murder him.

An orchestral suite derived from the music was performed in Budapest on 15 October 1928, conducted by Ernst von Dohnányi.

In comparison with Bartók's other two stage works, the opera Bluebeard's Castle and the ballet The Miraculous Mandarin, the score that came between them, The Wooden Prince, composed between 1914 and 1916, is heard much less often.
