Miramax

US film production and distribution company. It was founded in 1979 by Robert and Harvey Weinstein as an outlet for independent filmmakers and went on to become one of the leading independent film producers during the 1990s. It was acquired by the Walt Disney Company in 1993.

The Weinstein brothers started Miramax, named for their parents Miriam and Max, after they acquired the rights to the film The Secret Policeman's Ball at the Cannes Film Festival. They went on to work with a number of successful filmmakers such as Steven Soderbergh (sex, lies and videotape, 1989), Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, 1994) and Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, 1997).
