Miranda

Maritime state in northern Venezuela, on the Caribbean Sea; area 7,928 sq km/3,061 sq mi; population (1996) 2,303,302. The region is watered by the River Tuy, and the state also includes the Tacarigua lagoon along the Caribbean coast. Los Teques is the state capital. Coffee is extensively grown, and mineral resources await development.

The state is named after the Venezuelan national hero Francisco Miranda, founder of the movement to gain independence for the country from the Spanish.

Miranda

One of the five major moons of Uranus, discovered by Dutch-born US astronomer Gerard Kuiper in 1948. It is 480 km/298 mi in diameter and orbits Uranus at an average distance of 129,000 km/80,160 mi with a period (the time it takes to circle the planet) of 1.41 Earth days.

Images from the Voyager 2 probe show that the frozen surface is composed of huge blocks of rock and ice, suggesting that Miranda may once have been shattered by an asteroid impact and subsequently reformed.
