Mireille

Opera by Gounod (libretto by Michel Carré, based on the poem ‘Mirèio’ by F Mistral), produced at the Théâtre Lyrique, Paris, on 19 March 1864. Vincent and Mireille love each other, but they are opposed by her father, who favours the advances of bull-tamer Ourrais. Ourrais injures Vincent and is drowned by water spirits. Mireille undertakes a pilgrimage to see Vincent and dies of exhaustion in his arms.
