Misamis Oriental

Coastal province of northern Mindanao Island in the Philippines; area 3,570 sq km/ 1,378 sq mi; population (1995) 1,016,000. The capital is Cagayan de Oro. The province comprises a hilly inland area and a narrow coastal plain. The main products are coconuts, corn, rice, and timber. There are food-processing industries, and manganese and chromite are mined. Work began in the mid-1990s on the country's first integrated steel production complex at Villanueva.
