Mishawaka

Industrial city in St Joseph County, north-central Indiana, on the Saint Joseph River, 13 km/8 mi east of South Bend; population (1990) 42,600. Industries include the manufacture of plastics, rubber, missiles, vehicle and aircraft parts, and all-terrain vehicles. Mishawaka is the home of Bethel College (1947) and the United Missionary Church School.

Mishawaka was laid out in 1833 and incorporated as a city in 1899. It has a Flemish-speaking community as a result of Belgian immigration after World War II.
