Misratah

City and seaport on the northwest coast of Libya, 450 km/280 mi west of Benghazi; population (2005 est) 354,800. Industries include iron processing and the manufacture of steel, textiles, and carpets, with local agriculture including date palms and olives. The city, the third largest in Libya, after Tripoli and Benghazi, was founded in the 7th century and was once known as Thubactis. The main market is an important centre for the carpet trade.
