Missa parodia

    0.01 sec.

Missa parodia

Term arising from a mistaken conjunction of the words Missa and parodia which occur separately on the title-page of a Mass by the 16th-century composer Jacques Paix. His Mass is described as ‘Parodia mottetae Domine da nobis auxilium’, that is, it is based on material from the motet cited. Neither in this work nor in any other are the words Missa and parodia joined together. Many 15th- and 16th-century Mass cycles were based on material from a motet or polyphonic song, usually named in the title.
