Missisquoi River

River crossing the border between the US state of Vermont and the Canadian province of Québec; length 155 km/96 mi. The Missisquoi is renowned among sport fishermen for its walleyed pike.

From its source near Lowell, in Orleans County, northwestern Vermont, the Missisquoi flows north past North Troy into Québec. From there its course turns southwest, taking it back into Vermont, past East Richford, then west through Enosburg Falls and the Green Mountains. It forms a marshy delta as it flows into Missisquoi Bay of Lake Champlain, north of Swanton. This delta is the site of the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge (area 24 sq km/9 sq mi), an important resting place for migrating waterfowl. In the late 1980s, the Missisquoi River was the subject of a dispute over local fishing rights between the indigenous Abnaki people and the state of Vermont.
