Missoula

City in Montana, northwest USA, county administrative headquarters of Missoula County, on Clark Fork near the mouth of the Bitterroot River, 153 km/95 mi northwest of Helena; population (2000) 57,100. The city's economy depends on its sawmills and pastoral farming; products include plywood, paper, and processed food. Missoula has skiing centres. It is the home of University of Montana (1893).

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark camped at the site in 1806, and the settlement was founded as a trading post in 1860, serving as a supply point for gold miners. Its growth was spurred by the coming of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883.
