Mitchell

City and seat of Davison County, southeastern South Dakota, 100 km/62 mi west of Sioux Falls; population (2000) 14,600.

Founded in 1879, Mitchell is a trade, distribution, and shipping centre for a rich agricultural area producing grain, dairy goods, and livestock. It has meatpacking and food processing industries. Its huge Corn Palace, built in the Moorish style in 1892, is decorated with murals of coloured corn along its entire exterior, which are changed every year at the harvest festival. The reconstructed Prehistoric Indian Village and Museum of Pioneer Life are also situated here. The city is the site of Dakota Wesleyan University (founded 1885) and Mitchell Vocational Technical School (founded 1990).
