Mitchell, Edgar Dean (1930- )

US astronaut. He was the lunar module pilot of the Apollo 14 mission in January 1971, commanded by Alan Shepard, landing on the Moon to collect rocks, take soil samples, and set up a nuclear-powered science station. Mitchell was selected as an astronaut in 1966, and retired from NASA in 1972.
