Mitsubishi

Japanese industrial conglomerate (zaibatsu) comprising approximately 200 independent companies sharing the same founding management philosophy and trademark (the three-diamond emblem).

The conglomerate originated in 1870 as a shipping service, founded by Yatarō Iwasaki (1834–1885); after a series of name changes and a merger, the Mitsubishi Company was formed in 1886. During World War II, it was a major manufacturer of military aircraft, such as the high performance Zero naval fighter. In 1946 the holding company was dissolved, breaking up into independent enterprises. Core companies now include Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan's largest general trading company), Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
