Mivart, St George Jackson (1827–1900)

English biologist. He supported Darwin's theory of evolution generally, but denied it had any application to the human intellect. His works include The Genesis of Species (1871), Nature and Thought (1882), and The Origin of Human Reason (1899). He was excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church for his scientific articles, just before his death.

Mivart was professor of botany and zoology at Kensington Roman Catholic University College, London, 1874–84, and occupied the chair of the philosophy of natural history at the university of Louvain, Belgium, 1890–93.
