Miyake, Issey (1938- )

Japanese fashion designer. Active in Paris from 1965, he showed his first collection in New York and Tokyo in 1971, and has been showing in Paris since 1973. His ‘anti-fashion’ looks combined Eastern and Western influences: a variety of textured and patterned fabrics were layered and wrapped round the body to create linear and geometric shapes.

His architecture- and technology-inspired designs have had a considerable influence on the fashion scene. In 1993 he launched the pleated clothing line Pleats Please.
