Miyamoto, Kenji

    0.01 sec.

Miyamoto, Kenji (1908–2007)

Japanese politician. He was leader of the Communist Party 1958–77, succeeded by Tetsuzo Fuwa who took over in 1982. Elected to the upper house of the Diet (house of councillors) in 1977, he remained a party leader until his retirement in 1997.

Miyamoto joined the underground Communist Party in 1931. Arrested in 1933 for conspiring to murder a police officer, an allegation that he consistently denied, he remained in prison until 1945. During his leadership he renounced former calls for a violent communist takeover and promoted education, housing, and economic reforms.
