Miyazawa, Kiichi (1920–2007)

Japanese conservative politician, prime minister 1991–93. After holding a number of key government posts, he became leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and prime minister in November 1991. Defeated in June 1993 on a vote of confidence (triggered by demand for electoral reform), he called a general election for July. He resigned after the LDP failed to hold its majority (the party's first defeat in 38 years).
