Mizoram

State of northeast India, lying between Bangladesh and Myanmar; area 21,087 sq km/8,142 sq mi; population (2001 est) 891,100. The capital is Aizawl. The state features north–south ranges in the east that rise to over 2,000 m/6,500 ft. The state is densely forested. Agriculture, including shifting cultivation, is the main economic activity, and products include rice, maize, and hand-loom weaving. Industries are small-scale, and include sericulture (silk production) and sawmilling. 84% of the population are Christian.

Mizoram was made a Union Territory in 1972 from the Mizo Hills District of Assam. Rebels carried on a guerrilla war 1966–76, but in 1976 acknowledged Mizoram as an integral part of India. It became a state in 1986.
