Moate

Market town in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland, 16 km/10 mi east of Athlone; population (2002) 1,950. It lies in a rich cattle-grazing area with many archaeological remains. The large earthwork Mota Ghrainne Oile gave its name to the town.

There are a number of souterrains (prehistoric underground dwellings) and crannog (lake dwelling) sites and 5 km/3 mi northwest is a large conical earthwork over 18 m/60 ft high. Nearby at Bealin Twyford is a 9th-century carved cross approximately 2 m/7 ft high.
