Modena

Town in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, capital of the province of Modena, 37 km/23 mi northwest of Bologna; population (2001) 175,500. Industries include engineering and the production of vehicles (Ferrari), glass, textiles, shoes, pasta, and sausages. The town has a 12th-century cathedral, a 17th-century ducal palace, and a university (1175), with medical and legal faculties.

Modena was ruled by the Este family from 1288 to 1860. Its cathedral has a Romanesque campanile (bell-tower), the ‘Ghirlandina’, 88 m/286 ft high. The ducal palace is now a military academy. The Palazzo dei Musei houses important museums, art galleries, and a library, the 15th-century Biblioteca Estense.
