Modern Jazz Quartet

US jazz group specializing in group improvisation. It formed in 1952, disbanded in 1974, and re-formed in 1981. Noted for elegance and mastery of form, the quartet has sometimes been criticized for being too ‘classical’.

It is led by pianist John Lewis (1920– ), with Milt Jackson (1923–1999) on vibraphone, bass player Percy Heath (1923– ), and drummers Kenny Clarke (1914–1985) and later Connie Kay (1927– ).
