Modjeska, Helena (1840–1909)

Polish actor. She performed highly coloured interpretations of Shakespearean heroines, particularly Lady Macbeth, and also acted in the plays of Alfred de Musset, Victorien Sardou, Alexandre Dumas fils, and Schiller.

She made a reputation for herself in Poland, first in Cracow and afterwards in Warsaw 1868–76. In 1876 she moved to the USA, where she caused a sensation in San Francisco with Adrienne Lecouvreur.
