Moffo, Anna (1932-2006)

US soprano. She was admired for her beauty and the radiance and purity of her voice. Memorable roles at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, from 1959 include Violetta in Verdi's La traviata, Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto, Massenet's Manon, Debussy's Mélisande, and Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. In 1978 she sang Adrianna Lecouvreur at Parma.

She studied at the Curtis Institute, Philadelphia, in New York, and as a Fulbright scholar in Rome, making her debut on Italian television in 1956 as Butterfly. She remained very popular in Italy, hosting The Anna Moffo Show there from 1960 to 1973.
