Mohamed V

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.02 sec.

Mohamed V (1909–1961)

Moroccan sultan and king 1956–1961. Espousing the nationalist movement's aspirations, he was to become the symbol of resistance to French occupation. His forced exile to Madagascar in 1953 and his replacement by his brother Mulay Ben Arfa only contributed to enhancing his popularity as a leader of the struggle for independence. He returned to his country in 1955 and assumed power as first king of independent Morocco in 1956.

He succeeded the throne on his father's death in 1927. It was not until after the World War II that he showed a sense of independent leadership away from French control.
