Khorramshahr

Formerly major port and oil-refining centre of Iran, in the province of Khuzestan; population (2006) 125,900. On the junction of the Shatt-al-Arab and Karun rivers, it was almost completely destroyed in the 1980s during the Iran–Iraq War, but is now being rebuilt. It was formerly called Mohammerah.
