molasses

Thick, usually dark, syrup obtained during the refining of sugar (either cane or beet) or made from varieties of sorghum.

Fermented sugar-cane molasses produces rum; fermented beet-sugar molasses yields ethyl alcohol.

Unsulfured raw molasses, called blackstrap, is a nutritious food, containing in 1 tablespoon 585 mg of potassium.
