MoldaviaFormer principality in southeastern Europe, situated on the River Danube, and occupying an area divided today between the states of Moldova and Romania. Moldavia was independent between the 14th and 16th centuries, when it became part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1861, it was united with its neighbouring principality Wallachia to form the kingdom of Romania. In 1940 the eastern part, Bessarabia, became part of the USSR (the Moldavian SSR), while the western part remained in Romania. See also Bukovina.
