Molenaer

    0.01 sec.

Molenaer

Two Dutch painters, husband and wife. Both painted genre scenes in the style of Frans Hals.

In his early paintings, Jan Molenaer was influenced both by Hals and by Hals's younger brother Dirck, but after his marriage (1636) he began painting peasant scenes in the manner of Adriaen van Ostade and the quality of his work declined.

Judith Molenaer was one of Frans Hals's most brilliant and successful pupils, greatly esteemed by her contemporaries. She painted portraits, still lifes, and animal pictures as well as genre scenes. The Serenade 1626 (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam) is her best-known work.
