Molokai

Mountainous island of Hawaii, southeast of Oahu; area 673 sq km/259 sq mi; population (2000) 7,400. Kamakou (1,512 m/4,960 ft) is the highest peak on the island. Traditionally a spiritual centre and refuge from other parts of Hawaii, the island is now largely a resort for Oahuans. Its soil has not supported large-scale agriculture, and tourism is its major industry. The island was the site of a leper colony organized 1873–89 by Belgian missionary Joseph De Veuster (Father Damien).
