Monahans

City and seat of Ward County in the far west of Texas; population (1990) 8,100. Monahans lies 56 km/35 mi southwest of Odessa, at the southwestern edge of the Permian Basin. Part of the city is situated in Winkler County.

Monahans was founded in 1881 on the Texas & Pacific Railroad. It is a trading centre for a ranching region, and also has oil, gas, and pecan-nut processing industries. The Monahans Sandhills State Park (15.5 sq km/6 sq mi) is part of a natural wilderness area that was notorious among westbound pioneers, but in which Indians knew where to find water; the park is noted for its forest of dwarf oaks. The Monahans Sandhills form just a small section of the larger Texas Sandhills region, which stretches to the north.
