Monboddo, James Burnett (1714–1799)

Scottish judge and anthropologist. He was made judge in the Court of Session in 1767. In Origin and Progress of Language (1773) and Ancient Metaphysics (1779–99), he argued the case for human affinity with the orang-utan, anticipating Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
