Mönchengladbach

Industrial city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on the River Niers, 25 km/15 mi west of Düsseldorf; population (1995) 266,000. Industries include textiles, mechanical engineering, electronics, and paper. It is the centre of the German cotton textile industry and the NATO headquarters for North Europe.

The town grew up around a Benedictine abbey founded in 972 and dissolved in 1802. There is a Late Romanesque minster (11th–13th century), a baroque Rathaus (town hall, formerly the abbey), and a Romanesque nunnery. Rheydt adjoins the city to the south and is also a textile centre with electronics and leather industries. Hugo Junkers, the aircraft constructor, was born here.
