Monck, George (1608–1670)English soldier. During the English Civil War he fought for King Charles I, but after being captured changed sides and took command of the Parliamentary forces in Ireland. Under Oliver Cromwell he became commander-in-chief in Scotland, and in 1660 he led his army into England and brought about the Restoration of Charles II. He became duke in 1660.
