Moncton

City in Westmorland County, southeast New Brunswick, Canada, on the Petitcodiac River and the Trans-Canada Highway, 145 km/90 mi northeast of St John; population (1991) 80,700. It is the regional headquarters of the Canadian National Railways, and a distribution centre for the maritime provinces and Newfoundland. Its industries include telemarketing, food processing, and the manufacture of paperboard and vehicle parts. There are oil wells and natural gas nearby. The city is regarded as an Acadian centre; the francophone Université de Moncton (1963) is here.

It was settled by Pennsylvania Dutch and Acadians in the 18th century. Magnetic Hill to the north is a tourist attraction. The impact of its tidal bore has been lessened by silting.
