Moneta, Ernesto T

    0.01 sec.

Moneta, Ernesto T(eodoro) (1833–1918)

Italian traveller, soldier and political activist, editor, and publisher. Moneta was a militant pacifist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1907 with French law professor Louis Renault for his work in founding the Lombard Peace Union in 1887, for organizing peace conferences in Italy, and for presiding over the Milan International Peace Conference in 1906.

His publications include the four-volume Le Guerre, le Insurrezioni e la Pace nel Secolo Decimonono/Wars, Insurrections and Peace in the Nineteenth Century (1903–10) and La Nostra Pace (1909).

Born in Milan, Italy, Moneta became a soldier at the age of fifteen, from 1848 until 1866. He became a convinced pacifist early in his life and worked for peace simultaneously with fighting for the freedom of Italy. In spite of his lack of much formal education he became renowned for his journalism and was editor of Il Secolo from 1866 to 1898, and publisher of La Vita Internazionale/International Life from 1898 to 1918.
