Monmouth

City and seat of Warren County, in west-central Illinois, 23 km/14 mi west of Galesburg; population (2000) 9,800.

Monmouth's economy is based on the beef and corn farmed in the area. The city produces processed meats and pet foods, as well as pottery (manufactured here for over a century), farm implements, and boats. Settled in the 1830s, it is the site of Monmouth College (founded 1853).

Monmouth

City in Polk County, northwestern Oregon, 18 km/11 mi southwest of Salem; population (1990) 6,300. It is the seat of Western Oregon State College (founded 1853), the oldest liberal arts college in the state.
