Monn, Matthias Georg (1717–1750)

Austrian composer and organist. His symphony in D major of 1740 is the earliest dated symphony to have four movements with a minuet in third place.

After being a chorister at Klosterneuburg, near Vienna, he was, from about 1738, organist of the Karlskirche in Vienna.

Works

Orchestral

21 symphonies; ten partitas for string orchestra; seven harpsichord concertos, including one arranged by Schoenberg for cello and orchestra (1933).

Other

six string quartets; keyboard music; church music.
