Monroe| City and administrative headquarters of Ouachita Parish, northeast Louisiana, USA, on the Ouachita River, 160 km/100 mi east of Shreveport; population (2000) 53,100. It is situated in one of the world's largest natural-gas fields. Furniture, chemicals, and paper are manufactured from locally sourced timber. Other products include cotton and soybeans. It is home to Northeast Louisiana University (1931). |
