Monroe

City and administrative headquarters of Ouachita Parish, northeast Louisiana, USA, on the Ouachita River, 160 km/100 mi east of Shreveport; population (2000) 53,100. It is situated in one of the world's largest natural-gas fields. Furniture, chemicals, and paper are manufactured from locally sourced timber. Other products include cotton and soybeans. It is home to Northeast Louisiana University (1931).

Joseph Biedenharn, the first person to bottle Coca-Cola, lived in Monroe in the late 19th century.

French settlers founded the city in 1785.
