Monroe County| Administrative district in the far southeast of Michigan; 1,443 sq km/557 sq mi, population (1990) 133,600. Monroe County is bounded on the east by Lake Erie and on the south by the state of Ohio. It is drained by the River Raisin, and has its seat at the city of Monroe. |
| Agriculture in Monroe County is based on livestock rearing, dairy farming, the cultivation of field crops, and plant nurseries. There are also limestone and salt deposits, while some manufacturing takes place at Dundee and Monroe. Near Newport, 11 km/7 mi northeast of Monroe, the Fermi Atomic Power Plant was built in 1963 on the shore of Lake Erie. This facility experienced a meltdown and was deactivated in 1972. It was replaced by the Fermi II reactor in 1985. |

It is bordered on the north by Lake Ontario and is crossed by the New York State Barge Canal. Its seat and largest city is Rochester, which is also its main industrial centre. |
| Rochester's metropolitan area occupies a sizeable portion of the county's north-central region, where there is considerable suburban development. The rest of the county is known for its apple orchards, and produces vegetables, cereals, and dairy goods. There are a numner of resorts along Lake Ontario. |
