Monroeville

Borough in Allegheny County, western Pennsylvania; population (1990) 29,200. Monroeville is situated on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, 21 km/13 mi east of Pittsburgh.

In the 19th century, Monroeville was a stop on the Philadelphia–Pittsburgh stagecoach run, and its early growth was linked to its role as a transportation hub. Nowadays, it contains steel, coal, and nuclear research facilities, and is also a commercial centre for the surrounding townships and boroughs. It is home to the Boyce campus of Allegheny Community College.
