Monsigny, Pierre-Alexandre

    0.01 sec.

Monsigny, Pierre-Alexandre (1729–1817)

French composer. His first opera was produced in 1759, and his association with Sedaine as librettist soon consolidated his success. After Félix (1777), at the height of his fame, he wrote no more. He lost his fortune during the Revolution, but was given an annuity by the Opéra-Comique.

He studied the violin in his youth, but after the death of his father took an official position in Paris in order to support his family. A performance of La serva padrona in 1754 re-awakened his musical interests, and he took composition lessons from Pietro Gianotti (died 1765), double-bass player and author.
