Monson

Town in Hampden County, southwestern Massachusetts, 21 km/13 mi east of Springfield; population (2000 est) 2,100. The main industry is plastics, the traditional woollen and textile mills have closed down by the 1970s. The largest employer is the Developmental Center, a sheltered employment facility (providing employment for people with learning or who are physically challenged). Monson was incorporated in 1760 according to some authorities, although the date of 1775 is given on the town seal.
